Edwardsville events are usually based around a good cause, and the Taste of Edwardsville is all about good eats, good times, and a great cause. Sample some of the best food in Edwardsville from some of the favorite Edwardsville restaurants. Raise a glass to goodwill. Dance the night away with The Smash Band. This promises to be one party the neighbors can live with. All the proceeds are going to Edwardsville Neighbors in Need, an organization committed to helping local families recover from unforeseen hardships.This event will take place on April 28th at the SIUE Meridian Ball Room. As Global Brew wraps up its one year anniversary, Edwardsville Scene decided to take a look back at the past year for this local tap house.
For those of you who don’t know, Global Brew it is a tap house and lounge located above Wasabi in downtown Edwardsville. As the name suggests, it is beer-centric offering fifty different beers on tap and two hundred more in bottles, all different and fresh.There is also a small offering of select wines and ciders for the non-beer drinker, so if you don’t like beer or can’t have it worry not!
So what about shots?
Global Brew has those too and they all share three qualities. One, they are delicious. Two, they are affordable. Three, they are all crafted from the different beers on tap! That’s right Global Brew offers beer shots crafted on demand from the different taps. Be careful and don’t assume that because these shots are made from beer that they are not potent. Some of the shots have beers in them containing ten percent alcohol (for those not in the know, ten percent is a lot, for a beer).
The driving force behind the constant high product quality and sincere service are Ryan High, his wife Laura High, and Ryan Lowe (I’m not making this up, their names really are Lowe and High, and yes, one is taller than the other). The Highs and Lowe decided to go into business and open Global Brew a little over two years ago. In that time they picked a space, a business model, and set to making the best possible bar they could. In a little under a year Global Brew has gone from being the new bar in town to being, in my opinion, the best bar in Edwardsville. That’s right I said it, Global Brew is the best bar in Edwardsville.
This was not an easy decision to make because Edwardsville is filled with great places to drink after hours. For the dancer there is Big Daddy’s, for the lover of the high end there is Erato, and for lovers of bar bands there are The Stagger and Laurie’s.
So why do I peg newcomer Global Brew at #1? The first thing that strikes me about Global is how clean it is. Global Brew is the cleanest bar downtown (Cleveland Heath and Erato’s are just as clean but they are also restaurants so they are held to different standards).
Second is that no matter how packed it is, the whole place still has a laid back atmosphere. So even on the busiest nights you can still talk to your friends without yelling and the extra-long bar is designed so you don’t have to fight a crowd of people to get a refill.
Global Brew’s third winning feature is that when they do special events they do them right. Whether tapping a small specialty keg or throwing one of their beer dinners with Herzog’s Kitchen (next one is on Feb. 20) they do so with grace and good planning, and you are guaranteed to have a great time.
The final feature that wins me over (and there are many more but i’m sure you get the idea) is the amazing service that the Highs and Lowe demand from their bartenders and cocktail servers. A lot of bars and bartenders will leave you standing around in this town, not Global Brew. The service here is quick, efficient, knowledgable and friendly.
They have also recently struck up a deal with local restaurant Cleveland Heath, so you’ve got great food to go with your craft beers.
One thing to know before visiting is that they go through their kegs so quickly they can’t keep their tap list updated on their website (they admit to this fault on the site) so if you are expecting to get something you read about online, there is a chance your beer could be out. Global also does not have a kitchen.
The Highs and Lowe really have brought something to Edwardsville that makes the town a better and more enjoyable place to live. So my hat is off to them for their present and what I hope is continued success. And coming this spring is the next Global Brew Located in O’Fallon, Illinois across the street from the Hilton Garden Inn. Also Buffalo Wild Wings, Texas Roadhouse and Golds Gym are across the interstate, and Bella Milano (another Edwardsville favorite) is also building right next door. MacXprts is having there annual Apple Pie baking Contest Saturday, October 2nd 12pm-7:30pm.

Entry forms and and fee must be turned in by September 27th. Pies must be dropped off between 10 – 11 AM on October 2nd. Judging begins at 12:00 PM. Winners announced approximately 2 PM.
