Better late than never is what we always say with our Edwardsville music calendar!
Thursday, July 29

Two Swinging Picks, a band whose name can be taken several ways (we’re choosing to think of guitar picks) plays The Stagger tonight. We weren’t able to learn much about this band, but we’re assuming it’s two dudes with acoustic guitars. If you know more, fill us in.

Friday, July 30

Michael Harper plays the acoustic at The Stagger.

We’re guessing Jamhouse will bring the jam to Laurie’s Place.

Well, that’s it for this month. Once again, feel free to let us know if we missed anything, and also, help us share this calendar using the Twitter and FaceBook share buttons. Thanks!

by Jesse Gernigin

Attention Edwardsville! 222 Bakery is about to go through some changes.

Ownership has been completely handed off to Matt Heren, as Debbie Sultan has decided to further pursue her career in nuclear chemistry. I would like to wish her all the best and say that she made me feel welcome during all the time I have spent getting stuff done at the bakery.

In her absence, Matt plans to make some changes, and I am going to report on what will be happening over the next couple of weeks to give people a chance to anticipate things, and anticipate them you should, because they’ll be pretty awesome.

For starters, the bakery will be doing breakfast burritos, and while I have only got a chance to sample one of three burritos thus far, I loved it. Normally I am not a breakfast burrito guy, but this was pretty filling, with some great chorzio. The other two sound good, but I haven’t got a chance to get in there early enough to try them.

During the weekends Matt plans to do a fuller breakfast menu that will offer burritos, potatoes and, what I am most excited about, bacon waffles! Go ahead, go back, read that again. Drool. I’ll wait.

Matt will also be working with Kevin Williams of Farmhaus, a place I’ll be reviewing shortly for StLouisScene.net, to “beef” up the bakery’s sandwich selection. I am told that they are working on roasting their own beef and making their own corned beef, both of which I look forward to.

The bakery will close from July 5th to the 12th, and when it reopens, it will have new hours. Monday through Friday it will close at 5 pm instead of 8 pm, but it will now be open on Sundays. They will still open at six in the morning except for Saturday and Sunday when they will open at seven and close at two.

Well Edwardsville, you got the info, so all I can really say is, see you there!

Hey Edwardsville! Make all you music plans for the month here. As usual, we’ve got a great lineup this month, including some local favorites such as Aaron Kamm and the One Drops, and Butch Moore, as well as out-of-town bands like GreyMarket and Pik’n Lik’n. Let us know if we missed your event, and we’ll add it to the calendar.

Click band links to get more info such as times, samples of their music and more.

Thursday, June 10

Local musician Jason Garms keeps it coming with his weekly appearances at Laurie’s Place.

Local acoustic folk musician Ken Curtis plays the Stagger Inn.

Friday, June 11

Want some music with that wine? Springer’s Creek Winery in Edwardsville offers live music tonight and every Friday.

Edwardsville musicians Matt Meyers and Craig K play the Stagger Inn tonight.

The Mo’ Pleasure Band, as usual, has a marathon month at Laurie’s Place. Tonight see him at the back bar.

Saturday, June 12

This week’s mystery band is Family Chain Revue. If anyone knows where we can get more info about what kind of music this band plays, feel free to let us know in comments.

Mo’ Pleasure at Laurie’s Place front bar during the day with a jam session, and taking the stage for themselves this evening.

Sunday, June 13

Nothing like reggae by Aaron Kamm and the One Drops outside on a (hopefully) sunny summer day in Edwardsville.

Butch Moore keeps Edwardsville’s popular open mic night going at the Stagger Inn. Many a local band got its start here. Come out and see the up-and-coming local talent.

Monday, June 14

This week’s mystery band is Hill Williams over at Laurie’s Place. Any clues to what kind of music this band plays would be greatly appreciated. For some reason though, the name Hill Williams strikes me as country music.

Friday, June 18

The Five and Dimers keep bringing the music to Edwardsville’s summer Arts in the Park series

Come hear some terrific bluegrass down at the old Stagger Inn when Pik’n Lik’n comes to town to play a breast cancer benefit. See a clip of their music below. It’s a hell of a way to blow off some steam after the work week..

(Edwardsville music calendar continues below video)

By William Krause

An Edwardsville summer tradition, the Route 66 Festival, returns again this year after taking a hiatus in 2009. The 13th Annual Festival set for Friday, June 11 and Saturday June 12 in City Park is a celebration of both community and the historic “Mother Road.”

Friday’s festivities kick off at 5 pm with many local art vendors on site, like Jaimee Hayes, Cathy Schaefer, and the Edwardsville Art Center. There will be a wide assortment of merchandise from jewelry to ceramics and plenty of opportunities to pick up one of a kind items. The evening’s live entertainment will start with the Marquis Knox Blues Band taking center stage at 6:30, followed by the Ground Floor Band (see video below), another blues ensemble, from 9 pm until 11:30 pm. The whole show wraps by midnight.

Story continues below video:

Of course, if you really want to get your kicks on old Route 66, come out Saturday morning starting at 8 am for the 4th Annual Route 66 10K Run/Walk hosted by the Metro Milers Running Club. The course will take runners through some of Edwardsville’s older residential districts and the scenic Madison County Bike Trails.

If running isn’t your thing, take a leisurely drive down memory lane instead. The Historic Edwardsville Trolley Tour begins at 11 am and offers riders a guided glimpse into the past of Illinois’ third oldest city. Each tour lasts an hour and is a fun, relaxing way to learn a little more about the community. Once you’re done with your trolley trip head over to the history tent and take a glimpse at the Route 66 memories exhibit, see if you spot yourself, and while you’re there check out the Historic Preservation Commission’s “Doors” display, an eclectic mix of doors from 1850 to the mid 1900s.

If you want to have your own historic adventure pick up a Stroll-Goer’s Guide to Main Street and chart your own path. Get a quick history glimpse of downtown’s most famous buildings and then head inside to view some original detail and support a local merchant.

And of course, a Route 66 Festival wouldn’t be complete without a classic car cruise. Those Technicolor steel and chrome beauties of the past will depart Lincoln Middle School at 6:30 pm and cruise on past City Park, so don’t forget your lawn chair.

After a day of touring, running, and walking you’re bound to have worked up an appetite and the food selection appears to be promising. Local restaurants such as Fond will be on hand with black & white cookies, pita chips with hummus spread and herbal sodas, while Red’z Rib Shack will be grilling up their classic ribs with tater salad, slaw, and homemade bread, and Annie’s Frozen Custard, of course will be selling their own summer classic, custard. Along with these fine choices you have your Festival staples like Dutch Brothers’ funnel cakes, brats, kettle corn, Italian Ice, lemonade, and enough food to make a Weight Watcher cry. For the adults, Crushed Grapes will be on hand to serve craft beers and wine.

Music is that last integral piece that brings the whole Festival together and this year’s offerings is a mixture of local talent. The Municipal Band starts Saturday at 11 am, followed by a showcase of local talent beginning at 12:30. At 2:30 pm, Exit 12 performs with Blue 66 coming on stage at 4 pm. Fanfare goes on at 6:30 pm, and lastly Cruzen performs from 9 pm to 11:30 pm, bringing this year’s Festival to a close.

The Route 66 Festival looks to promise good food, good music, and great fun. But for many people around town and even farther abroad, the Festival will offer a certain type of nostalgia when they see those tail-finned cars cruise by. The mythology surrounding Route 66 harkens back to a time when gas was cheap, adventures were a calling to be undertaken, and the open road offered endless opportunities for freedom.

Wake up sleepy heads of Edwardsville! Pull yourself out of bed, get dressed, and bring yourself down to the Goshen Market on Saturdays. Don’t waste time either, don’t moan and bedraggle for a quick round of email checking (unless of course your seeing the updates on Edwardsville Scene, then by any means…) get yourself dressed and go.

Edwardsville’s Goshen Market is only open for four hours every Saturday, 8 am to noon, and if you don’t get there. you’ll miss out. For those of you who have to wonder at what you are missing out on (shame on you for not knowing about this awesome little bit of Edwardsville culture, it has been around since 1997!) take a stroll down the street right between the court house’s side and the old bank building. You’ll find fresh produce from local growers along with an assortment of nuts, honey, and flowers available to you direct from the producer.

If you don’t need any produce Saturday morning, no big deal, Goshen market doesn’t just deal in produce. Goshen Market also has vendors offering jewelry, paintings, and a collection of other things. Be sure to bring cash! No where on the site does it mention any availability in regards to credit/debit cards.

While I absolutely love the market, my schedule never lets make it in May. Don’t let yourself make the same mistake. I miss out on fresh asparagus and strawberries (things I absolutely love) don’t let the same thing happen to you.

If you head over to Goshen Market’s website they have a seasonal produce schedule. Check it out if you get a chance and know what fresh veggie goodness to expect when you go out this next Saturday. With all of the awesome produce in season you won’t leave disappointed. If you want more information swing by their website at www.goshenmarket.org.

by Jesse Gernign

Edwardsville, IL – Often in our lives we find ourselves longing for things we can otherwise not have.

I can’t count the times I have come back from a restaurant wishing I could take small and exceptional parts of it with me (handmade ketchups, hard to find cheeses, a unique wine). But I understand that restaurants often don’t want to reveal their sources, and honestly I don’t believe people can reproduce most plates seen in restaurants. They are often far more complicated in their preparation than first considered and usually require precision in technique far beyond the amateur chef.

That said, Amy Zupanci of Fond is pulling up the curtain on their operation by bringing their ingredients directly to your pantry. That’s right, Fond is opening up a boutique grocer called Township Grocer in Edwardsville beside the restaurant proper, and for those inclined towards finer ingredients, rejoice!

As for the products Township Grocer plans to carry, they have been holding the cards close to their chest. Amy hinted that they will be carrying some fine cheeses (bringing back silky blues from a farm in Vermont) some great American wines and a good deal of other fine things she wasn’t willing to disclose.

Secrecy is a fun thing, but thankfully Amy isn’t pushing the envelope too much. She has taken it upon herself to publish daily revelations on items on their lunch list. And yes, you read that right, Township Grocer will be doing a lunch. It seems that they will be doing a nicer lunch, which will be great. The lunch menu seems to subsist mainly of quality sandwiches, which I look forward to.

The opening is next week and I suggest swinging in when they open and checking things out.

Classic punk rocker Paul Weller makes it pretty clear in his song “Burning Sky.” Young rockers grow up, put on suits and sell out.

“Cause we’ve all grown up, and we’ve got our own lives, and the values that we shared once upon a time seem stupid now ‘cause the rent must be paid.”

The implication is, either you’re punk and you don’t worry about things like paying the rent, or you become part of the rat race.

If Resoldered ever heard this song, they never paid it much mind. The middle-aged, Edwardsville post-punk band’s newest album, Everybody In Between, starts off at a blazing pace with “You Failed Me.” This melodic post-punk song blows away any expectations you might have of working suits getting together to play in a band.

The rest of the album, which will officially be released April 24, matches the high expectations “You Failed Me” sets up, without falling into the repetivieness of some genre punk. And, probably an advantage of having middle-aged song writer who’s also a sociology professor, the lyrics are good, ranging from funny in “Can’t Stand” to poigniant in “I Won’t Die For You.”

Resoldered tries to avoid a genre label, in fact, but tend to compare themselves to classics like NoFX and Descendents. Story continues after video.

Listening to the new album, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that what they’ve done is the opposite of selling out.

When Edwardsville Scene met with bass player Doug Allen and guitarist/songwriter Dave Kauzlarich at Sacred Grounds last month, they made it clear they’re happy with their day jobs as teachers.

“This is not about getting signed,” says Dave.

Resoldered isn’t trying to come up with the next big hit, they’re just looking for a creative outlet.

“I think that’s what’s different for us,” says Doug. “We just do what we like to do. We have a lot of artistic freedom.”

The funny thing is that by not worrying about getting famous or getting signed, the band seems to have found a back door to the “don’t give a damn” punk attitude that Weller felt was essential.

And it’s paying off.

“We’ve started getting the respect of other bands” Dave says.

The night after The Ataris played Letterman, Resoldered got to open for them in St. Louis. They’ve also had the chance to play for other national acts, including Hurts to Laugh and Voice of Addition.

Resoldered got together a few years ago, of course, when Doug and Dave met through their kids at the Edwardsville YMCA, and eventually discovered they both had played some music in the past.

After that, the band congealed somewhat slowly.

“We went throught drummers like Spinal Tap,” Dave says. They even played a gig for friends using a drum machine. Finally, Dave prevailed on a former student, Paul Saunders, to become the band’s drummer.

The band officially formed in summer of 2008, and a year later had to replace orignal lead singer Cory Blad with Jason Hodge. Even now, they say getting a band practice together “is like convening a NATO summit” when everyone’s trying to juggle families and day jobs, and still make the band work.

In then end, their own lyrics sum up the feeling you might get discovering great post-punk (or whatever you want to call them) music coming from a middle-aged band in Edwardsville.

“It’s not impossible, just improbable.”

Resoldered officially released their new album, Everybody in Between on April 24 at the Firebird in downtown St. Louis at 8 pm. We hope they’ll play Edwardsville soon. You can buy the new album here. If you enjoyed this story, share it!
