Edwardsville to be Annexed by Wood River: Name Change Possible

Wood River, IL

The Edwardsville City Council met on Monday, March 30th to discuss being annexed by Wood River, IL and the name change that would be necessary. Fred Ufert the mayor of Wood River spoke to the Edwardsville City Council about the details,  benefits, and reasons for Edwardsville being annexed into Wood River.

Among the reasons for annexing is that Wood River is a historically more important town and location.  It was the official departure point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Thus the name of Wood River is more important to preserve than Edwardsville. Originally it was the Edwardsville City Council who had discussed annexing Wood River into Edwardsville. However, the tables turned after the National Historical and Preservation society wrote to the council to dispute the idea and to preserve the namesake and heritage of Wood River.

This is when the Wood River council led by Ufert decided to try to annex Edwardsville. Wood River, IL has a history of annexing other towns that have now long been forgotten. For example Benbow City in 1911 was annexed into Wood River. The claim is the county could save expenditures if the two cities were combined.

Wood River’s city officials promise that the change will be in every one’s favor and that they will be careful while combining the two towns to not create anger over the change. A public hearing on the idea is going to be announced shortly.
