Richard Gilewitz in Log House Concerts

Dubbed one of the strangest men in acoustic music, Richard Gilewitz plays a house concert at Log House Concerts on October 9 at 7pm. The show promises a mixture of musical styles from blues to classical as well as entertaining anecdotes from Gilewitz’ tours as a traveling musician.

Edwardsville Art Center Sponsors an Art Competition

Edwardsville Art Center is promoting a competition open to all artists.

The Edwardsville Arts Center, a community visual arts center located in downtown Edwardsville, Illinois is seeking art work in all media for a juried competition.

JUDGING

Judging will be done on JPEGS on CD / or video on DVD. Only entries postmarked by April 24, 2010 will be considered. Artists may submit up to three (3) works. Accepted work not accurately depicted by images submitted will not be installed. Juror’s decisions are final.

ELIGIBILITY

Open to artists 19 years of age and older; Original works in all media (except works that rely on the internet for display) completed in the last three years (2008, 2009, 2010); Student work can not be assigned classroom work.

FEES

A non-refundable fee of $25.00 is required per artist for up to 3 submissions. Make checks payable to: Edwardsville Arts Center.

Brigham Dimick, Associate Professor, Drawing Area Chair, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

AWARDS

Three winning artists will recieve a gallery show at the Edwardsville Arts Center in 2011.

FRAMING – PRESENTATION

Wall displayed art must be framed and equipped with hanging wires; all art work must be ready to install. Work may or may not be for sale. Video, film, or performance artists, please make special arrangements.

All entries must be postmarked by April 24, 2010.

Business Book Club at Glen Carbon Centennial Library

If you are looking to increase your business knowledge and skills while networking and making some new contacts, the new Business Book club organized by Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce is just the thing for you.

Book Club will be held on the third Monday of each month at Glen Carbon Centennial Library. First meeting takes place on July 19, 4.30-6 pm.

Sessions will be facilitated by a local business consultant with experience in human resources and leadership roles.

Matt Steel and Curt Brewer at Laurie’s Place

Local musicians Matt Steel and Curt Brewer play together at the Laurie’s Place front bar on Sunday, May 16 and Sunday, May 30 from 4 pm to 8 pm. Matt Steel is a country rock musician with a music degree from SIUE, and Curt Brewer, from listening to music on his MySpace site, seems to be more of a jazz and blues guy. Should be an interesting mix.

Mo’ Pleasure Band at Laurie’s

See the Mo’ Pleasure Band plays all the time at Laurie’s. In May, you can see them Wednesday, May 4, 12, 19 and 26 from 6:30 to 10 pm at Laurie’s Place front bar and in Laurie’s back bar on May 7 and May 22 starting at 9:30 pm in downtown Edwardsville. The band also holds jam sessions at the bar on May 8 from 2 to 6:30, May 15 from 1 to 5 pm, and May 22 from 2 to 6 pm.

Artisan Demonstrations at Goshen Market

For creative types or those looking to become creative types, the Artisan Guild of Southern Illinois will provide Needlework, Spinning and Weaving demonstrations at Edwardsville’s Goshen Market on Saturday, 22 May.

The demonstration will last from 8 am-noon.

Get ready for Xfest, SIUE’s Experimental Theatre Festival

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s first experimental theatre festival, Xfest, starts Wednesday, May 12 and runs until the 15. The Xfest is a festival of theatrical experiments done by both local and national theater companies at SIUE’s Katherine Dunham Hall. Here is the schedule of events. 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 13, “[ ]” will be performed by Red Metal Mailbox, a New York-based company
7:30 p.m. Friday, May 14, The Medicine Showdown by The Flying Carpet Theatre Co., a New York-based company
7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 15, Zen Tales by UMO Ensemble from Seattle, in the theater at SIUE’s Katherine Dunham Hall

Talk back sessions will be conducted following each performance, with directors and cast members fielding audience questions. Xfest workshops on campus will be open to the public and students. The Doggs Chasing Cars at Bourbon Street

Edwardsville, Illinois music scene and nightlife is offering up some heat in April.

We’re resisting the temptation to directly reference a 2000 pop song about dogs (named #3 in Rolling Stone’s list of most annoying songs) to tell you that The Doggs will be playing at Bourbon Street on Friday, April 2nd and Saturday April 3, from 9:00 pm to 1:30 am.

Come on out and watch The Doggs tear up the stage and a few Budweisers at Bourbon Street Bar and Grill. Bobby and Jay Rolens, Tim Campbell and Carig Varble will play everything from Merle Haggard to AC/DC!! Drink specials and NO COVER!!

Saturday Art Studio at SIUE

Come practice your craft with the Saturday Studio, sponsored SIUE’s Art & Design Department every Saturday, starting January 30 in SIUE’s Alumni Hall and the SIUE Art and Design Building. The Saturday morning art program is actually three classes—Primary Children’s, Ages 6-8, Room 3200 Alumni Hall, and Intermediate Art, ages 9-12, Room 3201 Alumni Hall, both from 9- 11:30 a.m.; and Drawing/Painting Jr./Sr. High, Ages 13-18, from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Room 2102, Art and Design Building.
